After the attack on the Twin Towers, world leaders explained Islamic terrorism as stemming from madness and poverty. However, social sciences have refuted these explanations. My own interviews with multiple murderers and the discovery that terrorists are often more educated and wealthier than the average population segment show that terrorists are driven by the same thought processes as ordinary people. They are like us. Politicians have demonized Islamic terrorists; social scientists have first “normalized” and then “humanized” them.
I gathered data on sex, age, education level, and profession (at the time of arrest) of individuals arrested and convicted for terrorism in Italy between 1970 and 2011 from the Department of Penitentiary Administration of the Ministry of Justice. I found that far-right and far-left terrorism was a predominantly “elitist” phenomenon that involved many young bourgeois. My Princeton colleagues have found similar results with Islamic terrorists. Terrorists can reason and compare. This poses a threat to our security.
Muslims compare five observable facts with the scientific method. The first is that the European Union imposed sanctions against Russia to punish the invasion of Ukraine but refuses to use them against Israel for the occupation of Palestinian territories. The second fact Muslims observe is that the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant against Putin in March 2023 (in record time), but does not take the same action against Netanyahu. The third fact they observe is that the European Union does not want to suspend arms supplies to Israel. The fourth fact that strikes them is that the European Union and the White House, with different but similar roles, have massacred hundreds of thousands of Muslims since 2001, including women, elderly, and children. The fifth fact that Muslims observe and compare is that the European Parliament designated Russia as a “State sponsor of terrorism” in November 2022, but does not want to do the same with Israel, despite its crimes against humanity in Gaza being much greater than Putin’s in Ukraine.
Finally, they note that the West is a threat to the international order because it systematically violates international law, as happened with NATO in Serbia, Libya, and Iraq: all illegal wars. Muslims say that no one destabilizes as many regions as the West: regions it bombs and then abandons in despair, as happened in Afghanistan, Libya, and Iraq. As a Muslim student at Luiss said to me: “Professor Orsini, I am impressed to see the obsessive self-celebration of the West in Italian universities. The West is massacring thousands of Palestinian children. Yet my professors do nothing but describe the West as a civilization morally superior to Islam.” A widespread thesis in Italy is that Islam hates the West because ISIS bombs killed 130 people in Paris, Bataclan, November 13, 2015. But Western bombs – Muslims say – killed 18,000 Muslims in Gaza in two months. Suppose social scientists decide to measure the hatred of one civilization towards another based on the number of massacres against the hated population. With statistics in hand, which civilization is more violent and full of hatred between Islam and the West?

Record di odio. Il doppiopesismo dell’Occidente fabbrica terrorismo

Dopo l’attentato contro le Torri gemelle, i leader mondiali hanno spiegato il terrorismo islamico con la pazzia e la povertà. Le scienze sociali hanno confutato queste spiegazioni. Le interviste con i terroristi pluriomicidi, che io stesso ho condotto, e la scoperta che i terroristi sono spesso più istruiti e ricchi del segmento della popolazione di riferimento, hanno mostrato che i terroristi sono governati dagli stessi processi di pensiero delle persone comuni. Sono come noi. I politici hanno demonizzato i terroristi islamici; gli scienziati sociali li hanno prima “normalizzati” e poi “umanizzati”.
Ho raccolto, presso il dipartimento di amministrazione penitenziaria del ministero di Grazia e giustizia, i dati relativi a sesso, età, livello di istruzione e professione (al momento dell’arresto) degli individui arrestati e condannati per terrorismo in Italia tra il 1970 e il 2011. Ho trovato che il terrorismo di estrema destra e di estrema sinistra è stato un fenomeno prevalentemente “elitario” che ha coinvolto molti giovani borghesi. Altri miei colleghi di Princeton sono giunti a risultati analoghi con i terroristi islamici. I terroristi sanno ragionare e comparare. Questo pone una minaccia alla nostra sicurezza.
I musulmani comparano cinque fatti osservabili con metodo scientifico. Il primo è che l’Unione europea ha introdotto le sanzioni contro la Russia per punire l’invasione dell’Ucraina, ma rifiuta di usarle contro Israele per l’occupazione dei territori palestinesi. Il secondo fatto che i musulmani osservano è che la Corte penale internazionale ha spiccato un mandato di cattura contro Putin nel marzo 2023 (in tempi record), ma non assume lo stesso provvedimento contro Netanyahu. Il terzo fatto che osservano è che l’Unione europea non vuole sospendere la fornitura di armi a Israele. Il quarto fatto che balza ai loro occhi è che l’Unione europea e la Casa bianca, con ruoli diversi ma simili, hanno massacrato centinaia di migliaia di musulmani dal 2001 a oggi, incluse donne, anziani e bambini. Il quinto fatto che i musulmani osservano e comparano è che il Parlamento europeo ha designato la Russia “Stato sponsor del terrorismo” nel novembre 2022, ma non vuole fare altrettanto con Israele, nonostante i suoi crimini contro l’umanità a Gaza siano molto superiori a quelli di Putin in Ucraina.
Infine, notano che l’Occidente è una minaccia all’ordine internazionale perché viola sistematicamente il diritto internazionale, com’è accaduto con la Nato in Serbia, Libia e Iraq: tutte guerre illegali. I musulmani dicono che nessuno destabilizza così tante regioni come l’Occidente: regioni che bombarda e poi abbandona nella disperazione, come accaduto in Afghanistan, Libia e Iraq. Come ha detto un mio studente musulmano alla Luiss: “Professor Orsini, sono impressionato nel vedere l’autocelebrazione ossessiva dell’Occidente nelle università italiane. L’Occidente sta massacrando migliaia di bambini palestinesi. Eppure i miei professori non fanno altro che descrivere l’Occidente come una civiltà moralmente superiore all’Islam”. Una delle tesi più difluse in Italia è che l’Islam odi l’Occidente perché le bombe dell’Isis hanno ucciso 130 persone a Parigi, Bataclan, 13 novembre 2015. Però le bombe dell’Occidente – i musulmani dicono – hanno ucciso 18.000 musulmani a Gaza in due mesi. Immaginiamo che gli scienziati sociali decidano di misurare l’odio di una civiltà verso un’altra in base al numero di massacri contro la popolazione odiata. Statistiche alla mano, quale civiltà è più violenta e colma d’odio tra l’Islam e l’Occidente?
