Ten years after Order 66, when most of the Jedi Order were killed, the Grand Inquisitor, Fifth Brother, and Third Sister (Reva Sevander) find a surviving Jedi, Nari, on Tatooine. Reva grows impatient and attempts to kill him, forcing the Grand Inquisitor to stop her, allowing Nari to escape. The Grand Inquisitor expresses his disapproval for Reva’s recklessness and obsession with finding another surviving Jedi, Obi-Wan Kenobi, who, unbeknownst to them, is also on Tatooine. Under the alias “Ben”, Kenobi works at a meat factory and watches over a young Luke Skywalker, the son of his former apprentice-turned-enemy Anakin Skywalker. He is haunted by memories of his past, and is unable to communicate with his former master Qui-Gon Jinn through the Force. Kenobi refuses to help Nari, and later sees his corpse hanging in town. On Alderaan, Anakin’s daughter Leia, who was adopted by Kenobi’s acquaintance Senator Bail Organa, is kidnapped by Vect Nokru’s gang, a group of bounty hunters hired by Reva to lure Kenobi. Organa contacts Kenobi and pleads with him to help rescue Leia. Kenobi refuses at first, but relents after Organa personally meets him.
* * *
MACE: You refer to the prophecy of the one who will bring balance to the Force.
You believe it’s this boy?
Anakin Skywalker, meet Obi-Wan Kenobi.
YODA: Clouded this boy’s future is.
The boy is dangerous. They all sense it. Why can’t you?
An apprentice you have, Qui-Gon.
Impossible to take on a second.
Obi-Wan is ready.
I am ready to face the trials.
QUI-GON: You’ve been a good apprentice, Obi-Wan.
QUI-GON: I foresee you will become a great Jedi Knight.
Promise me you will train the boy.
He will bring balance.
Master Yoda, I gave Qui-Gon my word.
YODA: Your apprentice Skywalker will be.
What took you so long?
ANAKIN: Obi-Wan is a great mentor.
As wise as Master Yoda and as powerful as Master Windu.
PALPATINE: You are the most gifted Jedi I have ever met.
I see you becoming the greatest of all the Jedi.
ANAKIN: I feel lost.
Lost? What do you mean?
ANAKIN: I’m not the Jedi I should be. I want more.
And I know I shouldn’t.
How do you know the ways of the Force?
My mentor taught me everything about the Force.
Even the nature of the dark side
Only through me can you achieve a power greater than any Jedi.
(GASPING) I can’t.
Don’t give up, Padmé.
PALPATINE: The power to save Padmé.
ANAKIN: I found a way to save you.
YODA: Twisted by the dark side young Skywalker has become.
The boy you trained, gone he is.
I will not kill Anakin.
This is the end for you, my master.
I have failed you, Anakin.
I have failed you.
It’s over, Anakin. I have the high ground.
You underestimate my power.
You were the Chosen One!
It was said that you would destroy the Sith, not join them!
He’s still alive.
OBI-WAN: You were my brother, Anakin.
PALPATINE: You shall be known as Darth Vader.
There’s good in him. (BREATHING HEAVILY)
YODA: Hidden, safe the children must be kept.
OBI-WAN: We must take them somewhere where the Sith will not sense their presence.
My wife and I will take the girl.
We’ve always talked of adopting a baby girl.
And what of the boy?
To Tatooine. To his family send him.
I will take the child and watch over him.
YODA: In your solitude… training I have for you.
Your old master.
How to commune with him I will teach you.
FEMALE YOUNGLING 1: This way! Quick!
(CLONE TROOPER GRUNTS)
Come on! Let’s go!
MALE YOUNGLING: Let’s go!
FEMALE YOUNGLING 1: This way!
Come on! Let’s go!
FEMALE YOUNGLING 1: This way.
FEMALE YOUNGLING 2: Hurry!
FEMALE YOUNGLING 1: Watch out!
(CLONE TROOPER SCREAMS)
Come on! Move! Quick!
Go. Come on! Go. Go! Go!
Run! This way! Hurry!
FEMALE YOUNGLING 1: No!
(BLASTERS FIRING IN DISTANCE)
(JEDIS GRUNTING, GROANING)
What do we do now?
PALPATINE: (ON SPEAKERS) Execute Order 66.
Execute Order 66.
Execute Order 66.
(INDISTINCT CHATTER IN OTHER LANGUAGES)
(JAWAS SPEAKING JAWAESE)
(ALL MURMURING INDISTINCTLY)
(GRAND INQUISITOR CLEARS THROAT)
You know who we are.
You know what we do?
You hunt Jedi.
In actuality, I would say the Jedi hunt themselves.
Do you know the key to hunting a Jedi, friend?
It is patience.
Jedi cannot help what they are.
Their compassion leaves a trail.
For example, in our line of work, rumors run rampant.
Here’s one I heard just recently.
It involves a Jedi hiding right here in your lovely saloon.
Let’s say ours is a wanderer.
Maybe he’s looking for people like him.
Comes across this establishment.
And then he sees you.
A man in need.
Perhaps the locals are stealing from you.
So what is the Jedi to do?
Help you and risk exposure?
Or move on?
Now, if he were smart, he’d keep moving, but the Jedi Code is like an itch.
He cannot help it.
So he steps in and saves your saloon.
You offer him a place to hide.
Fresh water, shade from the suns, but the stories, they begin and they travel quickly.
His compassion has been his undoing.
Prepare him for interrogation.
You’re wasting your time. You know that, right?
You’ll never find us all.
GRAND INQUISITOR: You are reckless.
Why chase after scraps?
Scraps are all we have left.
Then we should be hunting bigger prey.
He is not yours to find. We are past this, Third Sister.
I will not warn you again.
You will forget this fixation with Kenobi, or I will relieve you of your duties.
Is that clear?
Yes, Grand Inquisitor.
(SOFTLY) Consider him forgotten.
(WORKERS CHATTERING INDISTINCTLY)
(FOREMEN SHOUTING ORDERS)
(INDISTINCT CHATTER CONTINUES)
(DROID SPEAKING INDISTINCTLY)
It’s only half.
Please, I have a family.
One more word, I take it all.
Something you want to say?
(FOREMAN SPEAKING OTHER LANGUAGE)
(WORKERS SIGHING WEARILY)
OBI-WAN: (IN ENGLISH) You’re late.
Do you have it?
I’ll give you…
I’ll give you 50.
Yes, I had some parts stolen. I need a new processor board.
Teeka, if you’re gonna steal my parts and then sell them back to me, could you at least clean them first as a courtesy?
(SCOFFS) Well, don’t count on it.
I’ve heard the Jedi are all but extinct.
Well, thank you, Teeka. Goodbye.
PADMÉ: I know there’s…
OBI-WAN: You were my brother, Anakin!
Promise me you will train the boy.
YODA: Only pain will you find.
PADMÉ: There’s good in him. I know there’s…
OBI-WAN: You were the Chosen One!
I hate you!
OWEN: Grab two of those canisters.
Did he go back inside?
He’s run off.
(SMALL ROCKS FALLING)
I thought I saw you in the town, but I wasn’t sure.
I didn’t think you’d survived.
You’re making some kind of mistake.
I’m sorry, my name is Nari.
Um, there’s no mistake.
You’re looking for somebody else.
What are you doing here, Obi-Wan?
My name is Ben.
NARI: Come on, please.
You have no idea what I’ve been through.
You must leave.
You’ll draw too much attention.
But I have nowhere to go.
They’re hunting me. You have to help me.
You want my help?
Walk into the middle of the desert and bury it in the ground.
Live a normal life.
What about the people that need us? What about the fight?
The fight is done.
What happened to you?
You were once a great Jedi.
The time of the Jedi is over.
Go back to the town.
Let it go.
We’re going to be late.
Come on, let’s hurry it along.
How is she doing?
Remember, my sister’s whole family is coming.
We need their support.
So try not to make anyone cry.
There will be sweetmallows at the reception after.
If you behave, I will let you…
She insisted you would find it amusing, Your Highness.
She’s either in the cellar, in the kitchen…
(SIGHS) …or in the woods.
Pleasure barge, boring.
Casino ship? Not bad.
(CHIRPS IN AGREEMENT)
Ooh. A Tri-wing. That’s a new one.
Ooh. An Aquillian Ranger.
Probably scouting for Merson pirates.
No? Trader, maybe?
BREHA: Leia Organa!
You had to do this today?
It is like raising a Glor-ag.
No Lola for the rest of the day.
But she didn’t do anything.
Shut her down.
I mean it.
If you behaved as well as you climb, you’d be a senator already.
(SIGHS) You’ll have to change in the speeder. Come.
It’s not like anyone would miss me if I wasn’t there.
I’d miss you.
All I ever do is wave.
BREHA: Then do more than wave.
You get out of this what you put into it.
LEIA: I’m sorry, Mother.
I really am.
I promise I won’t do it again.
You know, I can feel you doing that.
LEIA: It’s like living in a prison.
BREHA: A prison?
(SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC PLAYING)
(WORKERS CHATTERING WEARILY)
I want you to stay away from him.
We don’t need anything from you, Ben.
It’s just a toy.
It’s a lot more than that.
There’s more to life than your farm, Owen.
He needs to see that. There’s a whole galaxy out there.
I’m asking you to leave us alone, Ben.
I mean it.
Is he okay?
You don’t care if he’s okay.
You care if he’s showing.
He’s my responsibility, Owen.
I’m his uncle.
We talked about this.
When the time comes, he must be trained.
Like you trained his father?
Anakin is dead, Ben, and I won’t let you make the same mistake twice.
So, leave him on the farm with his family, where he belongs.
MAN: Move. Now.
All of you.
Out of the way.
You know why we are here.
There is a Jedi hiding on this planet.
We need to know where he is.
You will be rewarded well.
Or you’ll be punished!
FIFTH BROTHER: Reva!
Hands go first!
That way, when you reach for anything, you think of us.
WOMAN: This is the Outer Rim.
You have no rights here.
We’re not under the Empire’s…
(CROWD GASPING, EXCLAIMING)
REVA: All we want is information.
If anyone knows anything about a Jedi…
You know something?
What’s your name?
My family’s of no concern to you.
They might be.
You got a Jedi on that farm, too?
Why should I believe you?
I have no love for the Jedi.
Jedi are vermin.
I kill vermin on my farm.
You protect your family.
I like that, Owen.
You think you could protect them from me?
(SHOUTING) Tell me where the Jedi is, or this man and his family die!
The Jedi are cowards.
They failed you, abandoned you.
There is no point in protecting them.
They would not do the same for you.
But you can save this man.
Save his family.
FIFTH BROTHER: Enough!
If you remember anything, rewards will be given.
Stand down, Third Sister.
Next time, Owen.
FIFTH BROTHER: Ah! Move.
You are too impulsive.
I’m sick of wasting time!
This place is beneath us!
The Grand Inquisitor was right.
You still want Kenobi.
But he’s gone, and you won’t find him.
We spent the last ten years looking for him.
Maybe you’ve been looking in the wrong places.
What is it you think you will gain by capturing him?
What I’m owed.
Be careful, Third Sister.
You go too far.
Maybe you don’t go far enough.
Thank you, Owen.
I didn’t do it for you.
Right on time as always.
Anything good today?
A trade ship and an Aquillian Ranger.
Probably scouring for pirates.
That’s what I said.
Don’t encourage her.
Let’s get this over with.
LEIA: Hi, cousin.
WOMAN: Oh, there they are. (LAUGHS)
MAN 2: Princess.
MAN 3: Hi, Princess.
KAYO: Profits have been good.
After the disaster of the Republic, the Empire is finally lining some pockets.
There are still some issues that we need to address.
Slave labor, taxation of the Outer Rim…
I didn’t come here to end slavery, Bail.
I came to eat your food. (CHUCKLES)
Save the bleeding heart for the Senate.
A drink, Senator?
Ah. Thank you.
(ALIEN SPEAKING OTHER LANGUAGE)
(C-3PO TRANSLATING IN OTHER LANGUAGE)
Y-O: Your Highness.
Oh. Thanks, Y-O.
Y-O: My pleasure.
(SCOFFS) You thank your droids?
It’s good manners.
You don’t need manners when you’re talking to a lower life form.
Then I guess I don’t need manners when I’m talking to you.
You know the difference between you and me, cousin?
I know things.
My father says they never let you leave this planet.
They don’t want anybody to know about you because you’re not one of us.
You’re not even a real Organa.
You’re scared of him.
Your father. You want him to like you, so you repeat what he says even though you don’t really know what it means.
You think being like him will make people frightened of you, but really, you’re the one who’s scared.
You’ve never made one decision for yourself in your entire life, and you never will.
I may not have seen much, cousin, but I can see that.
He was being horrible to everyone.
He’s your cousin.
He’s rude to droids.
You have to rise above, Leia.
You owe him an apology.
I’d rather be digested by a jakobeast.
BAIL: I wanted to live out way past Kathou when I was your age.
Chase purrgil, you know?
I had a whole plan.
I got older.
Had to find some other adventures.
Started chasing your mother instead.
This is your future, Leia.
In a few years, you’ll be off to university, then Junior Senate.
LEIA: The Senate’s boring.
It’s people in itchy clothes arguing.
(LAUGHING) Well, it may seem so…
I don’t want to be a senator.
It is why you’ll probably be one of the best.
I’m not even a real Organa.
Don’t ever say that.
You are our child.
You are an Organa in every way.
One day, this planet will look to you, Leia.
There are many ways to lead.
You just have to find yours.
Plus, imagine the look on your cousin’s face when you get to boss him around for real.
But for now, we will… apologize.
I’ll wait for you downstairs.
I thought you said you’ve really got through to her.
You know what she’s like.
I know who she’s like.
Send a unit.
She can’t be far.
VECT: Hello, Princess.
Why are you here?
Help! Help me, please!
We don’t know who it was.
No ransom, no leads.
Whoever they are, they knew where she would be. They…
They were waiting.
She needs you, Obi-Wan.
We can’t trust anyone else.
What about the Senate?
BAIL: We cannot let this become public.
It would draw too much attention.
Well, your guard then? Or a bounty hunter?
Only you know how important she really is, Obi-Wan.
If Leia is discovered…
I can’t leave here, Bail.
My duty is to the boy…
What about your duty to his sister?
She’s as important as he is.
It’s been ten years.
I’m not who I used to be.
Find someone else.
She’ll be better off.
LEIA: (GRUNTING) Let go of me!
Shut her up.
(MERCENARY AND LEIA GRUNTING)
(MERCENARY LAUGHING MANIACALLY)
(CROWD GASPING, MURMURING)
BAIL: She’s headed for Daiyu.
You should not have come.
They hid their signature behind a freight transport.
The ship is on its way there now.
She’s my daughter, Obi-Wan.
I told you… I’m not the man you remember.
You’re going to have to be!
I can’t leave the boy.
This isn’t about the boy, and you know it!
You’ve made mistakes. We all did.
It’s the past.
Move on. Be done with it.
You couldn’t save Anakin, but you can save her.
And what if I can’t?
There is no one I trust more with my child than you.
Please, old friend.
One last fight.
Come on, Lola. Come on.
Can you untie me?
I’m not afraid of you.
Give it time.
My father will rescue me!
He’ll send a whole army!
No one’s coming for you.
This is a bad idea.
Kidnapping kids… you think it’s gonna work?
Just get this over with.
You sure he’s gonna come?
REVA: He fought beside her father during the war.
He won’t be able to help it.
The Jedi will hunt himself.
(INDISTINCT CHATTER IN OTHER LANGUAGE ON PA)
You coming or not?
(THEME MUSIC PLAYING)
