Episode plot: In the aftermath of the bombing, Pine fakes his death and Cavendish disbands the Night Owls. Pine is helped by Sally Price-Jones, his suspended colleague, and Basil Karapetian, a senior MI6 official aware of Pine’s real identity. Together, they establish an identity for Pine as playboy banker Matthew Ellis to go undercover in Colombia. There, Pine meets Dos Santos and discovers he is attempting to silence prosecutor Alejandro Gualteros, who has impounded a key shipment of his. In the UK, Basil deceives Cavendish whilst setting up surveillance on her operations. Invited to a charity gala, Pine reunites with Roxana and confronts her about her actual role with Mayhew. Roxana had been deployed to deceive Mayhew, but was unaware of the murders that would follow. Pine recruits Roxana to work for him. He also hires private detective Martín Álvarez to dig into Teddy’s past. They discover his true identity as Eduardo Vidal, Roper’s illegitimate lovechild. With Teddy’s business accounts frozen by Gualteros, he approaches ‘Ellis’ for a loan. Pine is invited to Teddy’s villa with Roxana to negotiate. They party and Pine is deliberately driven to inebriation by Teddy for questioning. However, Pine sticks to his cover story of having illegally stashed money to launder. Teddy accepts the offer.

The Night Manager – S02E02 – Episode 2 | Transcript

[Mayra] The Night Owls is a surveillance unit. You watch, you listen, you report. You do not hunt down.

[Sally] Alex Goodwin was my boss. He gave the order to follow Michel Hebert to Spain. We thought that he had authority.

[Mayra] Well, he had none.

[Sally] Did he say why he was following some gunrunner on a fake passport?

[Mayra] No.

[Sally] He only told us what we needed to know.

[Mayra] That’s all? Are you a sheep? You know, Alex Goodwin’s recklessness not only cost him his own life, but the lives of some of our finest servants. I’m hereby terminating the Night Owls unit. And as for you, Ms Price-Jones, you should take some time off. And if anyone outside this room asks… your unit was never in Spain. Is that clear?

[Sally] Yeah.

[Mayra] Good. You can go.

[Sally] Thank you.

THREE CLIFFS BAY, WALES

OPERA MUSIC PLAYS DOOR OPENS

[Pine] Sally.

[Basil] It’s all right, Jonathan. We’re alone. I come here most weekends to fish. Bit of a bolt-hole to clear the mind.

[Pine] Where’s Sally?

[Basil] She’s about a mile from here. Waiting for us to join her.

[Pine] Why did you call me Jonathan?

[Basil] Because it’s your name. Jonathan Pine. The man who brought down Richard Roper. When, six years ago, Rex asked for my help in creating the new you, I was happy to oblige. I’ve long been an admirer from afar. Let’s have some tea. We need to talk. Mayra Cavendish believes you died in that hotel room explosion. I used my influence to ensure the report mentioned two bodies in that room. There was, in fact, only one. Sally’s told me about the Alcestis, Cartagena, Teddy Dos Santos. Let me help you, Jonathan. Whatever you’ve got in mind, you can’t do this alone.

[Pine] I found these in the Roper archive. This one is from Teddy Dos Santos. Did Richard Roper smuggle arms into Colombia in the 1990s?

[Basil] It was never proven.

[Pine] But?

[Basil] Almost certainly.

[Pine] OK. Then I think Teddy is continuing his business model, and I think British Intelligence is helping him.

[Basil] You can’t use service cover now. Too risky. Mayra has friends in many places, as Rex discovered.

[Pine] What about Roxana Bolanos?

[Basil] Not a trace. Maybe they killed her too, but we can’t be sure.

[Pine] Hey.

[Sally] Waleed shouldn’t have been there.

[Pine] I know.

[Sally] He had children, and he had a bloody beautiful wife.

[Pine] I know.

[Sally] I have no-one. An arthritic dog. You should have told us about your past.

[Pine] I’m sorry, Sally. How’s Mike?

[Sally] He left the service. He went straight to the Square Mile.

[Pine] You know, you should do the same. I’ve put you in too much danger already.

[Sally] I’m not going anywhere. They died for nothing, otherwise. Come on.

[Sally] OK. The trucks arrive tomorrow to take the cargo from Cartagena Port but you asked for a way to stop it.

[Pine] Who is he?

[Sally] Alejandro Gualteros, public prosecutor in Medellin. Now, he has tried twice before to stop Barquero, but he got nowhere. We’ve tipped him off under the code name Max. He’s impounded the shipment for us and he’s frozen Barquero’s bank accounts.

[Basil] Which means Teddy will need cash flow. That’s your way in. We’ll use the Roper piggy bank. Seems appropriate, given you stole it in the first place. 300 million, last time I looked.

[Pine] OK.

[Sally] But you can’t be Alex Goodwin.

[Pine] So, who am I?

[Sally] Matthew Ellis. 43 years old. Born in Norfolk to a second-rate merchant banker and an alcoholic mother who slept with half of Fakenham. Good for her.

[Sally] Good?

[Basil] Yeah. Try this one here.

[Sally] You’re a very wealthy man with a penchant for risk. Pinstripe. Try that. That’s not it.

[Pine] Right.

[Sally] No, it’s… It’s cheap. It’s not…

[Basil] It’s obvious.

[Sally] It’s obvious. You made your own path, creating and then just trashing companies in Europe and the Gulf. Shoes… No socks with these shoes.

[Basil] Try it with this. Yeah.

[Sally] Finally, you settled in Hong Kong, working for a Swiss investment outfit, Steiger and Sons.

[Pine] That?

[Basil] Yes. That’s him.

[Sally] That’s him.

MEDELLÍN, COLOMBIA

[Sally] You are in Medellin after a scandal with the Hong Kong bank. You’re on your own, you’re dodgy and you’ve money to burn. You’re staying at the Gran Melia because, naturally, that is the only hotel in Colombia that you would ever be seen dead at.

[Pine] Naturally.

[Sally] Naturally.

[Pine] Matthew Ellis.

[Sally] You’ve run away from family, relationships, and any responsibility. And you’ve given in to your vices.

[club manager] [in Spanish] The sports facilities are through here. The club bar is open until…

[Pine] Thank you.

[Sally] Now, Teddy’s lawyer, Carrascal, is your way in. He loves to gamble. They lunch together every Tuesday after his tennis practice at his club. That’s your chance to be a snake in their garden.

[Basil] Jonathan, any red flags, you follow the escape routes immediately. I’d normally take months to do something like this.

[Pine] See you there.

[Sally] With my sun hat on.

MEDELLÍN GUN CLUB, COLOMBIA

[Juan] Morning.

[Pine] Morning. You might have the same problem I had. Coach had to leave. Family issues, apparently.

[Juan] Are you new to the club?

[Pine] Flew in two days ago. Matthew Ellis, member of the Simmonds in London.

[Juan] Juan Carrascal.

[Pine] Hi. You want to play a set?

[Juan] Yeah.

[Pine] Do you want to make it count?

[Juan] Yeah. How much for?

[Pine] $1,000?

[Juan] You don’t mess around, do you? [in Spanish] I’m going to beat you.

[THEY LAUGH]

[Pine] Ace.

[Juan] Nice serve.

[Pine] [GRUNTS] 30-love. Game. 1-love to me.

[Juan] Well done, Englishman.

[Pine] 2-love.

[Juan] Well done. Oh, come on!

[JUAN EXCLAIMS IN SPANISH]

[Pine] OK. 3-love to me.

[Juan] Out! My serve.

[Pine] 1-3.

[Juan] Out!

[Pine] Way in. You’ve got to be fucking joking.

[Juan] Not your lucky day today.

[Juan] [EXCLAIMS IN SPANISH]

[Pine] Your serve.

[Pine] Fuck!

[Juan] That’s my set! You have a strong forehand, but you rely on it too much.

[Pine] You sound like my father. Here’s your money.

[Juan] Forget it. It would be like taking candy from a baby.

[Teddy] Hey, Juan. Don’t be cruel. Hmm? [in Spanish] I’ll see you inside with Sánchez.

[JUAN RESPONDS]

[Teddy] How was your game?

[Pine] I lost.

[Teddy] Hmm. Do you know what they say?  Hmm? Defeat makes you stronger.

[Pine] Let’s hope so.

[Teddy] You are new, right?

[Pine] I just flew in.

[Teddy] Come. I’ll walk you inside.

[woman] Buenos dias, senor.

[Pine] Hi.

[Teddy] You’re English?

[Pine] From Hong Kong. Swiss bank. Been there for ten years.

[Teddy] And what are you doing in Colombia?

[Pine] Let’s just say it’s getting more complex to work with our Chinese friends, so I’m seeking new opportunities.

[Teddy] Hmm. You are a risk taker.

[Pine] In life… as on the court.

[Teddy] I like that.

[club manager] [in Spanish] Mr Dos Santos, I’m sorry to interrupt. General Sánchez is waiting at the bar.

[Teddy] [in Spanish] I’ll be a moment, thank you.

[Teddy] I have to go, my friend.

[Pine] Sure.

[Teddy] Nice to meet you. I hope Colombia treats you well.

[Pine] See you around.

[Teddy] Where are you staying?

[Pine] At the Gran Melia, while I make plans.

[Teddy] Take care, amigo.

[Teddy] [in Spanish] General, thank you so much for coming.

[General] With pleasure, Eduardo. Tell me, how can I help you?

[Teddy] His name is Alejandro Gualteros. He is making my life difficult. He’s frozen all my bank accounts. Impounded the shipment. Now he wants to look inside. And that cannot happen.

[General] Don’t worry, leave it to me.

[Teddy] Make it quick. No money. No operation.

MINISTRY OF JUSTICE, MEDELLÍN

[Sally] Let me get that for you, Alejandro. Gracias.

[Alejandro] Excuse me. Who are you?

[Sally] You received a tipoff ten days ago. The sender’s code name was Max. You impounded the shipment for us, and Max wants you to know we’re very grateful.

[Alejandro] Yeah, but I can’t open it. I just got this letter. The military are stopping me.

[Sally] Let me guess, General Horacio Sanchez?

[Alejandro] Yes. Who are you?

[Sally] It’s OK, Alejandro. We’re friends. This conversation was recorded in Richmond, London, two weeks ago. Listen to it, but share it with no-one. We want to know what’s going on, just like you do. So whatever Teddy Dos Santos offers you to release that shipment, you refuse it. We’ll talk soon.

[Mayra] Rex Mayhew was a servant to his country over many decades. He was a man of deep principle. A dyed-in-the-wool Englishman. But more than anything, he was a devoted husband to Celia, an adoring father and grandfather… and a dear friend, who I shall remember with a twinkle forever in his eye.

[Mayra] I hear you’re having Alex Goodwin’s body flown back from Spain.

[Basil] What’s left of it. Not much, I’m afraid.

[Mayra] [SIGHS] You see… Alex made a mistake. He got involved above his head… fought the wrong people.

[Basil] And Rex?

[Mayra] Rex… was a tragedy. What about you, Basil? Where do you stand in all this?

[Basil] You know where I stand. I’m loyal to the service. Always have been.

[Mayra] Yeah, but what service? This mythic England of Rex’s? Green fields and croquet? It’s been paved over. Our paymasters want us at the top table. We may have to stand on some heads to get there.

[Teddy] I have to talk with Juan. Can you take care of our guest?

[Pine] You want to talk first, or shall I?

[Roxana] Why don’t you?

[Pine] In London, you told me you didn’t know Teddy. Said you’d never met him. That’s not the case, is it? You called him from that hotel room. You were working for him all that time.

[Roxana] I don’t know what you’re talking about.

[Pine] Don’t lie to me. Now, I recorded our London conversation, and it places you right at the heart of the Barquero operation. So, we can do this informally, or we can choose a different route. Arrest warrant. Accessory to murder. Extradition to London. I’m not alone here, by the way. There’s a support team outside, waiting. So, how we do this is up to you.

[Roxana] What do you want?

[Pine] The truth.

[Roxana] Keep smiling for the cameras. Rex found me. He called me in Miami.

[Roxana] He’d noticed traffic between River House and Colombia. My name was mentioned.

[Roxana] I had no idea that would happen.

[Pine] Who did it? Teddy’s people? London?

[Pine] What’s in the Barquero shipment? Because it isn’t machine tools.

[Roxana] Teddy didn’t tell me.

[Roxana] He’s watching us.

[Pine] Hmm. Are you two together?

[Roxana] He’s with nobody in that way.

[Pine] But he trusts you, clearly.

[Roxana] He trusts no-one. I should be back in Miami by now, instead I’m stuck here in his villa under constant surveillance. It’s like I’m his fucking prisoner.

[Pine] You don’t look like a prisoner to me. The man talking with him on the mezzanine. He’s a senior prosecutor. Alejandro Gualteros. Ten days ago, he impounded the shipment after an anonymous tipoff.

[Roxana] That was you?

[Pine] He’s also frozen the company’s bank accounts. Now, Teddy’s going to need cash flow to meet his deadline. That’s where you come in. You’re going to convince him that Matthew Ellis is the man he needs. You’re going to vouch for me. I want a meeting in three days.

[Roxana] You know I can’t do that.

[Pine] What do you mean?

[Sally] There have been five from the UK to Colombia in the last two years. All different ships, all different cover names. But all through Roxana Bolanos’ Miami outfit. Now, the previous cargos, they’ve been large, 20 containers each. But the Alcestis only has one. And it’s the final shipment. We need the shipment lists in that briefcase to know what we’re dealing with. Jonathan. What is it? Are you listening to me?

[Pine] Get in.

[Sally] Are you listening to what I’m saying to you?

[Pine] Sh.

[WHISPERS] Jonathan, what’s going on?

[TV PLAYS]

[Sally] Talk to me, Jonathan.

[Pine] Teddy is Richard Onslow Roper’s son. Roper was gunrunning in Colombia in the ’90s. He met a married woman. They had an affair. She had a son. They sent him away, changed his name, hid his past. Now he’s continuing the family business.

[Sally] You OK?

[Pine] I feel like I’m chasing ghosts.

[Sally] Jonathan. No! Look at me. There are no ghosts here, OK? There’s a dodgy shipment, in Cartagena, that me and you need to open before they do. It’s six of six.

[PHONE RINGS]

[Pine] Hello.

[Roxana]  I’ve got you an in. If you’re interested, I’ll come and pick you up tomorrow for lunch.

[Pine] Tomorrow lunch sounds great.

[Roxana]  Wait. If he finds out… he’ll kill me.

[Pine] He won’t find out.

[Alejandro] It was delivered to my home.

[Sally] Just trying to scare you.

[Alejandro] Well, they are succeeding. So, you need to tell me what’s going on.

[Sally] I’m pretty sure the cargo you impounded contains illegally imported British weapons. It’s the last of six shipments. If we’re right, that’s a lot of weapons. And we need to know who they’re for. There’s been talk of a deadline for the final shipment. Codenamed Anniversary.

[Alejandro] That may not be a code name.

[Sally] What do you mean?

[Alejandro] The ten-year anniversary of the peace process is in a week’s time. Maybe the anniversary is real.

[Sally] We need to open that shipment, Alejandro.

[Alejandro] You saw the letter from the military. My hands are tied.

[Sally] OK. If I can get you proof of what’s inside those containers, then will that help untie them? If I can get you a list. Right.

[Roxana]  Salut.

[Pine] Cheers.

[Roxana]  So, they’re interested. The Barquero bank account remains frozen. They need money while they solve the problem. Teddy’s noticed you. He detects an alcohol problem. An appetite for risk.

[Pine] And…?

[Roxana]  He wants to sound you out about a potential short-term loan. No fingerprints. Easy getaway.

[Pine] How much?

[Roxana]  $20 million.

[Pine] That’s a lot of money.

[Roxana]  Well, it’s a serious operation. And right now, they need cash flow. But I want guarantees.

[Pine] What kind of guarantees?

[Roxana]  I get you what you want, I disappear back to Miami. No plea bargain, no key witness. I was never here.

[Pine] Done. What happens now?

[Roxana]  I call Teddy from the bathroom… if I still think you’re the right man for the job.

[Roxana] [in Spanish] For hours. Mm-hm.

[Teddy] And then I offered her the Barquero commission.

[Pine] Just like that?

[Teddy] Just like that.

[Pine] One dance and you get a whole business deal.

[Teddy] Well, I’m one hell of a dancer.

[Pine] I bet you are.

[Teddy] What is important is that, five years later, here we are. I’m loyal, Matthew, to those loyal to me. But now Roxy tells me that you are looking for investment opportunities. Is that right?

[Pine] Well, that depends.

[Teddy] Mm-hm. You left England in your twenties… and never went back. A man on the run. But from what, I wonder.

[Pine] That is none of your business.

[Teddy] You were in the Army for a while.

[Pine] I was. I left.

[Teddy] No. Thrown out. Bad behaviour.

[Pine] So?

[Teddy] Ten years in Hong Kong…

[Pine] Indeed.

[Teddy] …working for a private Swiss bank.

[Pine] Mm-hm.

[Teddy] Big profits. Then, three months ago, a sudden split. No explanation. And now you’re here, on the lookout. I don’t know, but some people will call that questionable.

[Pine] Look, I made a lot of money. I got bored. What’s to explain?

[Teddy] Roxy likes you.

[Roxana] No. No, I didn’t say I liked him. I said, “I think we can work together.”

[Teddy] In that case… I have a simple offer for you. If you say, “Yes,” I can promise you rich rewards. There is only one condition.

[Pine] Which is?

[Teddy] You ask no questions of me… and I ask no questions of you. Everything is trust.

[Pine] What’s the return?

[Teddy] Double your money in three months. If you accept, you are in. It’s a leap of faith. Understand?

[Pine] I’ll think about it.

[Teddy] Oh. Just don’t take too long because we might look elsewhere.

[Pine] Well… we don’t have to rush things.

[Teddy] You know what? You’re right. Let’s enjoy.

[Roxana] Maria, champagne, por favor.

[Pine] I think I understood that one.

[MUSIC THUMPS]

Salut!

[Pine] Hey!

OK!

[Pine] Oh, my God, OK. Now…now we’re really getting the party started. You guys know how. No, this is the real Colombia.

In my country, they say…

[SPEAKS SPANISH]

..that means one, like, do another.

Yes, here.

Roxy.

And remember, here, always, to the dead ones. Just a little.

[Pine] A little to the dead ones, how much? That much? Yeah?

Yeah.

[Pine] For the dead ones.

[CHEERING]

Yeah, yeah, I remember that semifinal…

What was it, semifinal, quarterfinal?

This is the way to…

This is the Colombian way.

This is the Colombian way. Salut.

Salut, wait, one for the dead…

To the dead ones… No, no, no.

Not this time? Chinchin, down the hatch.

[CLAPPING]

[THEY MUTTER]

[ECHOING VOICES AND MUSIC]

Help me!

No!

Welcome to the family…family…

[ECHOING VOICES]

[Teddy] Is he OK?

Help me.

[Teddy] Matthew. Matthew? Are you OK? Who are you, Matthew? Why are you really here? You can tell me everything. You’re safe here.

[Pine] I’ve come for you.

[Teddy] Really? Why?

[Pine] Cleaning the money.

[Teddy] What money?

[Pine] I lost the bank… 600 million.

[Teddy] [WHISTLES] That’s a lot of money.

[Pine] Yeah. Yeah. Uh-hm. Gone. Swiss bankers not happy. Ruins the family image!

[Teddy] Mm. So, they kicked you out?

[Pine] Yeah. Yeah.

[Teddy] So, how is it you have money to invest with me, huh?

[Pine] Uh-huh… Well… I hid it.

[Teddy] Hmm.

[Pine] 25 million. Special account. Belize. Fucking Swiss didn’t find it. Sh! Sh! Sh. I’m not real. You’re not real.

[Teddy] So, now… Now you need to clean that money, huh?

[Pine] Mm-hm. Wash it clean. Colombia’s a… launderette.

[Teddy] Lavandería.

[Pine] Lavandería.

[Teddy] Uh-hm. I can help you to do that, Matthew. If you trust me.

[Pine] I trust you.

[Teddy] Yeah? I can make you clean.

[Pine] Make me clean. Make me clean.
