[wind whistling]

[door closes]

[Rachel] Thanks for the ride and… everything.

So, uh… what the fuck are you gonna do now?

[wind whistling]

I’m gonna… smile my face off at the rehearsal dinner tonight and survive my wedding day tomorrow and, you know, live happily ever after because he is my soulmate.

Yeah. Well, I think you might be in denial.

You’re 100% sure he’s your soulmate?

Yeah. We have fate on our side.

I mean, pure fate, the way that we met, and… lots of other things.

We have a great relationship, so, yeah, I’m gonna… I’m gonna be fine.

Just… give me a percentage.

75, 80?

Hey, you made us all stand around telling a creepy stick doll about our feelings.

92.

Okay. Okay.

Okay. Okay.

So you’d get on a plane if the pilot was like, “Welcome aboard, ladies and gentlemen.”

“There is a 92% chance we make it to our destination.”

I would trust my gut, and Nicky would too, and I know that. For a fact.

Just, you know, maybe get… get that number up to 100…

Okay. …before you walk down the aisle.

Yeah. Great. Thanks. Okay.

Okay. I’m not… I’m not gonna die.

[inhales] All right.

Good night. It’s fucking morning.

[wind whistling]

[eerie music playing]

[door closes]

[bed creaking]

Where have you been?

Do you believe in curses?

[creaking]

[Nicky] Mmm.

[Rachel] Mmm.

I had a dream you were a tarantula, and you were mad at me.

And then you were you again, and then you were really, really mad at me, and then you left me at the altar.

I would never do that to you.

[Nicky] Mmm.

Are you gonna turn into a giant spider, though?

[chuckling] I’m gonna try really hard not to.

[Nicky yawns]

[Nicky groans]

You are the one person for me.

You are the one.

Of course. I feel the same way.

No, I’m serious.

[Nicky] Mmm.

What your mom said about you, about your soul…

It’s so pure and perfect.

I’m never gonna let anything happen to it because your soul is mine, and mine is yours, okay?

We are good. We are incredible. We’re the best couple we know.

[Nicky chuckles]

[Rachel] Mmm.

What’s up with you? Don’t you agree?

No, I completely agree. Okay, then why are you like…

I’m just… No, I like it. You’re just…

You’re being so… What?

Romantic. Honest?

[Nicky] Mmm.

We are soulmates.

So it doesn’t matter.

What doesn’t matter?

[Victoria] Oh, look at you! You’re all so beautiful.

[glass clinking]

Good afternoon, our beloved family.

[guests applauding lightly]

We would like to welcome you all here, those who’ve come from near and from far…

[woman 1 chuckles] Yes.

…to celebrate our son, Nicky, and his lovely bride, Rachel.

[woman 2] Yay!

[man] Nicky!

I would like to take this opportunity to tell a story about the love that created you because neither of you would be here if it weren’t for you and me.

[guests cheering, applauding]

Some will spend their entire lifetimes asking themselves, “What makes two people soulmates?”

I can tell you this with absolute certainty.

I found my soulmate by a stroke of luck.

[woman 3] Aw…

Some may even call it fate.

I was an intern at the time.

In fact, I had just completed a 30-hour shift when something tells me that I shouldn’t leave just yet.

Something tells me that I need to go back and say goodbye to my buddy, Beau, who was just starting his shift in the ER.

I hear this angry voice yelling at me.

[guests laughing]

I turn around, and there is the most gorgeous woman I had ever seen staring at me.

And what was this gorgeous woman saying?

She was saying…

[sobbing]

…”Can you put it back on?”

[guests laughing]

[Dr. Cunningham] And what a sight. This beautiful woman is standing there with a bloody dish towel wrapped around her finger, saying she’d nearly sliced it off, and she’d been waiting there all night.

Yes, we go back into the ER, and I’m starting to wonder, “Does this man even work here?”

And, you know, I convince myself because he’s got the hospital badge, he’s got the scrubs.

So I think he must at least be a doctor.

Well, yeah, but I’m not an ER doctor, though I had done a rotation in emergency medicine, so I’m racking my brain trying to remember what… what to do.

I take her to an exam room.

I start gluing her finger back together, which is going surprisingly well.

[Victoria] Oh, it was so painful, and I started to think, “This guy really doesn’t know what the hell he’s doing.”

But you stayed.

Well, you were cute, and I was bleeding.

Just a short while later, I took that same finger, and I put a ring on it.

I still can’t feel the tip of it, though.

Don’t tell them that!

It’s okay.

I’d make the same trade again and again to have you.

[woman 4] Aw! [chuckling]

[Dr. Cunningham] So… here we are.

Here all of you are!

And tonight, I would like you to share your wisdom with our newest soldiers on the warpath to holy matrimony.

[guests chuckling]

Please join me in raising a glass to the happy couple, to fate, and pretending you can do something, even if you can’t, as long as it’s in the name of love.

[all] Cheers.

Cheers. [cheering]

[Dr. Cunningham] All right, please, let’s enjoy the party.

[man] I love that story.

My mother told us the best thing you can do before you decide to marry someone is go through something traumatic together.

How will you find out who the other person really is?

It’s essential.

But what if nothing traumatic happens?

Or did you go through something traumatic together on purpose?

[woman] Oh, no, we didn’t need to. Frank’s mother died in front of us.

Has anyone died in front of you?

Uh…

Kind of.

[Frank] What about you and Nicky together?

Uh, no, no one’s ever died in front of us together.

Well, you have two days.

Excuse me.

[Portia] Rachie! Rachie!

Oh. There you are.

Sorry. Have you met our cousin Kiki?

She’s on a lot of Xanax. Kiki!

There she is!

[chuckles] I love your look. It’s so edgy.

Oh, thanks.

[Portia] Rachel’s a psychiatrist.

[Rachel] Oh, no, I’m a– You are? What do I have?

Sorry, that– What do you have of what?

[Kiki] I want a second opinion.

You don’t have to diagnose her here in public.

You can tell her later in private.

This is my husband, Doug. We’re childhood sweethearts.

They met at Columbia. Hi.

[Kiki] How did you meet Nicky? Oh, it’s such a good story.

It’s almost as good as my parents’. It’s like cosmic fate.

[Rachel] Um, okay.

[Portia] Tell them the story.

Okay.

So, um, a couple years ago, I was traveling all over the country interviewing for graduate programs.

And my last interview was at UT Austin.

And I had this terrible feeling all day, but I… I forced myself to go to the interview, but the feeling is just, like, growing and growing and, like, suffocating me.

Anyway, by the time I get to the airport, it was just completely overwhelming.

I’m at the gate, and I’m standing in line to board the plane.

And it suddenly hits me. [snaps fingers]

This… this is the bad thing.

[eerie music playing]

If I get on this plane… something–

[dramatic music playing]

[inaudible]

How did you know that?

[Rachel] I can’t explain it. I just knew. And then I started really freaking out.

So, I’m watching all these people get on the plane, and… [inhales]

…I’m totally paralyzed.

Eventually, I’m the only one left, and the gate agent is, like, getting on the intercom, looking straight at me, saying, “Final boarding, last call, all ticketed passengers.”

But you weren’t the last one, right?

No. [chuckles]

There was one other person.

This… guy. This… cute guy.

And I thought, “Fuck.”

“It’s so sad that this cute guy is gonna perish with everyone else on this doomed flight.”

Final, final boarding.

And I, at this point, haven’t moved in, like, 20 minutes, and the gate agent is all pissed off, and the cute guy notices me, and he walks to where I’m standing, and he says, “Are you okay?”

And normally I’d be like, “Yeah, I’m fine.” [chuckles]

Like, “Go away.”

But there was just something so inherently trustworthy about him.

I literally look at him, and I say, “I’m gonna sound crazy, but… I have a feeling that something bad is gonna happen, and I can’t explain it any more than that, but I’m not getting on that plane.”

And he looks at me, and with this perfect little smile, he says, “Fuck it.”

“Let’s drive.”

[Kiki] No.

[Portia] Yes.

Yeah. Just like that. “Fuck it.”

[Portia] Yes.

“Let’s drive.”

[Portia] Mmm.

At a moment’s notice, no questions asked, he just trusted my feelings as real.

Wow. It’s like… like magic.

It’s not even the best part.

Rachel– Oh my God. Tell ’em the best part.

Stop being Jules, Jules.

Tell them the line.

So, the door is closed, and we are officially on this journey together, and I thank him, you know, for doing this, and he looks at me, and he says, “I think you just saved my life.”

Oh… [Doug chuckles]

Tears.

[Rachel] I know.

[Jules] When was this?

[Rachel] Hmm? When was this?

Three years ago.

When exactly? Crazy. Uh, February.

Why does that matter?

So, did the plane crash? Who gives a shit, Doug?

Rachel. Rachel.

There’s someone I wanna introduce you to.

[Rachel] Okay.

Sorry. Bye. Lovely to meet you both.

[Nell] Just through here.

You… [chuckling]

[Nell] You okay? Yeah.

[Nell] Mmm.

I… I’m not actually introducing you to anyone.

Oh? You looked in need of saving. No?

No. I was actually thriving.

Thriving? Oh, you were? Oh, okay. Yeah.

Do you want to talk about it? Talk about what?

[laughs]

What’s your percentage now? I don’t know what you’re talking about.

Have you told him?

No, he doesn’t need to know if it’s not gonna be a problem, and it’s not.

Because a soulmate is fated.

Right? Our souls are connected, and then they split apart, and the way that we met…

I mean, the odds. [chuckling] The fucking odds.

Of all people I’ve met and all the circumstances, I mean, if there is such thing as a soulmate, then, yes, Nicky is my soulmate.

[Nell] Okay.

And also because I love him.

Okay.

Okay. You don’t have to believe me.

Mm-hmm.

[chuckles]

[Nell] Do you believe you? Yes, I do. Yes.

You do? Okay.

[Rachel] I do.

[inhales] I mean, I’d take, like, one fucking sign from the universe that confirms Nicky is my soulmate so I don’t die at the altar, but yes, I do.

[Nell] Mmm…

It’s not coming. [laughs]

That’s funny.

How about a drink? Oh, yes.

By the time I was at the airport, I was just suffocated with this feeling.

I couldn’t bring myself to get on the plane.

I just knew that something very bad–

The gate agent is like, “Final boarding, last call, all ticketed passengers,” and I’m totally paralyzed.

Like, I haven’t moved in 20, 25 minutes.

And this cute guy, it’s too bad that he’s gonna perish with everyone else on this doomed flight.

[guests laughing] [woman] Wow.

[gulps] And so I look at the gate agent, and she’s looking at me, and she’s all pissed off, and I notice the guy, the cute guy, and…

“Fuck it. Let’s drive.”

[all laughing]

[indistinct chatter]

Sorry, I already said this to you. I’m, like, repeating myself.

“I think you just saved my life.” “I think you just saved my life.”

“I think you just saved my life.”

“I think you just saved my life.”

Wow, that’s so amazing.

So is this the fate thing?

This story, your fated meeting, the reason you think Nicky is your soulmate?

Yes, a city that neither of us live in.

We happen to be on the same flight, and he understands my inexplicable dread enough to drive me across the country.

Honestly, it’s so romantic. Like, truly, right out of a movie.

But also kind of creepy. I mean, he was a stranger, right?

Babe. It’s not creepy at all.

It would’ve been if you weren’t getting married.

But they are, so it’s just romantic. Why was Nicky in Austin anyway?

Uh, I think that he was visiting a friend from college.

[Jules] Which friend? Who cares?

Something doesn’t add up.

[chuckles]

What doesn’t add up?

Can you stop picking holes in the story? It’s a good story.

[Rachel chuckles]

Where did you guys meet? Hi.

Hi. Hi. Oh.

Hi. Hi. Speaking of.

Um, so my Aunt Valerie is begging to meet you.

She said she has some very important marital advice for us, so…

Turns out we went to elementary school together.

He’s actually, uh… No, he’s… No, he’s a… he’s a nice guy.

All right, come on.

And it works every time.

I’m trying to find girl Nicky. Um, I’m pretty sure she was from Austin.

Who?

Girl Nicky, you know?

The girl Nicky dated after that girl Molly and then before Rachel.

Why?

Something isn’t adding up. What was her last name? Do you remember?

Do you remember? Come with me.

No. Yeah?

No. Yeah?

No. Hey.

[Nell] Why are you so obsessed with this story?

Because Rachel’s fucking cursed.

What’s that got to do with it?

She clearly thinks this stupid romantic story proves that they’re meant to be together and that it’s gonna save her life.

But I think there’s more to it, and I need to prove it. I need to…

Why?

So she doesn’t die. Sorry. Behind you.

So she doesn’t die like her mother did.

But why is that your problem?

Because her dying mother told me to prevent the same thing from happening to her, so I have to try.

But I was there.

But you shouldn’t have been. But I was.

[Rachel] I’m the only one left.

The gate agent is getting on the intercom, looking straight at me, saying, “Final boarding, last call, all ticketed passengers,” and–

You forgot the cute guy.

[Rachel] Oh, right. Thank you.

[Rachel] Yes, sorry, just me and this cute guy.

And, um, the gate agent is just saying my name over and over and over and over again.

And then the cute guy comes over–

[Jules] Why weren’t they calling his name too?

Hmm? You…

You keep saying you were the last two passengers, but they were only calling your name.

Ignore him. Keep going. So he comes over, and he says…

[Rachel] I, uh…

[Jules] You’ve never wondered?

Uh, no, Jules. [chuckling] I’ve never even thought about it.

Let’s get a drink. Wait, wait.

What? I want to know.

[exhales] [Rachel] Nicky.

Okay. It was February 15th, right? The day you met?

Uh, yes. Dude.

[shushing] Stop. Let him finish. Oh my God.

[Jules] See, I was confused because I thought you two met in March, but then she said February, and that confused me more because I thought you were dating girl Nicky in February 2023.

So I checked her Instagram, and yeah, she posted you on Valentine’s Day that year.

And also, you must have been dating girl Nicky because you were gonna bring her to our wedding.

Which was on February 15th.

The wedding you skipped, which was not in… Where were you flying to?

Uh, Chicago.

It was not in Chicago. It was in California.

So I’m doing the math, and I guess what really happened is that you were in Austin with girl Nicky.

And she dumped you either on Valentine’s Day or the day after.

That’s enough.

[Jules] She dumped you right before.

You were both supposed to fly to our wedding, and you didn’t get on the plane.

Maybe because you were too ashamed to go to our wedding alone.

I don’t know.

But you must have sat in that airport all day, moping around, looking for someone to save you because you’re too codependent to be single for more than two minutes.

And then you found her, an escape hatch.

[tense music playing]

All this time, I thought you missed my wedding because you had the stomach flu and that you met her, like, a month later.

But actually, you lied to both of us.

So that’s why they weren’t calling his name.

[Rachel] It’s not a joke. Really.

There is a horrible, fucked-up curse that has plagued my bloodline for centuries, and if I don’t marry my soulmate by sundown on Sunday, I will die.

[somber music playing]

And if I don’t get married, the curse will spread to his bloodline, which is, like, all of you.

[guests murmuring]

[Rachel] Sorry, Jules.

I don’t think I told you that part.

I mean, put yourself in my position. Would you have married that person?

What is she doing? She’s drunk. Want me to stop her?

But don’t worry, because I… I wouldn’t do that to you.

That’s enough. That’s enough. Rachel. It happened to my mother.

She got married and died right over there, actually, on the other side of these woods. I just found out I was born in this place, which is actually kind of crazy because now it appears

I’m going to die here as well, so…

Yes, you are right. It is actually kind of like cosmic fate, Portia.
