I’ve gotten Bunny to think you’re an avenging angel, not the traitor that you really are. I’ve untangled your fucking mess, okay? You’re welcome. You can report back to duty like nothing ever happened. Okay?

[Mike] Yeah. Now’s when you say, “Thank you, Mike.”

How do I know I can trust you?

[Mike] Because I do exactly what I say I’m going to do, don’t I? And what’s your alternative anyway? You gonna do this on your own? Take your chances and run? I mean, Jesus, Lamar, you got two of the baddest motherfucking gangsters gunning for you, son. How long do you think you’re gonna last on your own?

All right, everybody, listen up. [sighs] We, uh, continue to cooperate with local authorities. I will provide you with updates as I receive them. As you all know, it has been a difficult few days. Little bit of housekeeping. Deputy Warden Torres has resigned, effective immediately. So, go out there, do your jobs. Hypervigilance at all times. That’s all.

[Chester] Kyle signs the consent form, I file the motion rescinding his guilty plea, we get the hearing if the D.A.’s office is really playing ball. ‘Cause I got to say, I’m a little suspect.

Yeah, you are fucking suspect, Barry.

Why the charity?

There’s a single condition.

[Chester] Ah, of course. Not my business. You get your judge on board and keep the goddamn datebook open.

Yeah, soon as I make the call, we’ll have the hearing at Anchor Bay, but you’re really gonna go in there and tell them your representation was bullshit?

It’s not bad lawyering, Evelyn, far as I’m concerned. My client had an awakening in the crucible of prison. If I got to get my hands a little dirty, that’s my job.

[Mike] He knows why I’m here?

[Mike] Okay.

He’s catatonic. I can barely get him to move. I check his breathing like I did with my kids when they were little.

[Mike] Yeah. Okay, look, I need to see him.

[lock buzzes, latch clicks]

[door closes]

[Mike] [sighs] Hey, Kyle. You don’t have to talk to me. You don’t have to look at me. Just need you to listen. Today’s your last day inside, Kyle. Barry’s coming back with your paperwork. All you got to do is sign it. That’s all you got to do, and then we get you out of here.

It’s too late, Mike.

[Mike] No, Kyle. It’s not too late. Now is not when we quit. We’re gonna take this one step at a time. Okay, you have a son. You have a son that needs you. He needs his father. I need you. You’re my brother. We’re all that’s left.

[cries]

[Mike] So I need you to take this fucking pain, take all this rage, I need you to make it work for you. You hear me? Whatever we got to do, we’re going to find this animal. [Mike] [sighs] I think he’s going to sign the papers. His attorney will be here this afternoon. He’ll need to be walked in. I don’t have time to waste on this, you understand?

Judge Sappiano’s office called about the conference room.

[Mike] Okay, great. Appreciate it.

It’s impressive. You pulled it off. I’m, uh, I’m happy for you, Mike. You’re saving your brother’s life.

[Mike] Yeah, well, might be too little, too late. We’ll see. How about you? Anything I can do for you?

Eh, you got enough on your plate.

[Mike] Did you get your people to back off?

They need another. They got the one who fucked it up. Now they need the one who saw it go down, the one who, uh, fed the information to the Crips, and then I will be free.

[Mike] Got a name for you. It was Lamar. Lamar took out LJ. KPD’s got footage. Camera at a gas station or something.

That is Deverin’s man.

[Mike] Yeah.

But why? Mike, why would he do that? Why would he kill Lawrence?

[Mike] Why? [laughs] Fuck. You want the real talk? Frank, you know the fucking answer to that question.

[Mike] Yeah. Lamar’s your plant. You tried to take out Bunny, you tried to take Kingstown, and when that didn’t work, ’cause Bunny survived, Lamar, he was in a vise. Either finish the job with Bunny, or take you out. He chose door number two and failed at that.

And you have suspected this, Mike, for how long?

[Mike] It’s not rocket science, Frank. It’s just business, right? Come on. You asked me to bring you the man that killed your friend. I’m giving him to you, like I said I would. You want to take another shot at Bunny, that is entirely up to you.

[Mike] Yeah.

Good to go. Kyle signed.

[Mike] [sighs] Thank God. All right, thank you. Appreciate it.

[line rings]

[Ian] Hey.

[Mike] Listen to me. I need you to get to 864 Eastern Avenue.

Uh, Eastern… What for?

[Mike] You’re gonna catch Moses in the act. Okay? Let him go inside, you’ll get everything you need to take him down. You understand? Keep this quiet, just you and Stevie go.

So, what, I file this under an anonymous tip or what?

[Mike] I don’t know. Whatever you want to call it. Just don’t fuck this up, this gets Kyle out of jail. This saves his life.

And you are in that vortex, and I am in it now, too, with your sorry ass. LJ’s free of it.
