“Hijo De La Luna” (“Son of the Moon”) composed by José María Cano.
This song was initially performed by the Spanish band Mecano.
It appeared on their 1986 album, Entre el cielo y el suelo.
This song narrates the tragic tale of a gypsy woman who makes a pact with the moon, agreeing to give up her firstborn child in exchange for a husband. When her son is born pale and different, the husband suspects infidelity and kills the woman in a fit of rage, then abandons the child. The moon takes the child, and its phases are said to reflect the child’s moods.
Lyrics:
Only a fool wouldn’t understand A legend tells Of a gypsy woman Who conjured the moon until dawn Crying, she pleaded “You shall have your man, dark-skinned woman,” For a mother who sacrifices her child Moon, you wish to be a mother Son of the moon Born to a cinnamon-skinned father, a child Cursed is his appearance Moon, you wish to be a mother The gypsy, feeling dishonored Then he fled to the mountains Moon, you wish to be a mother Son of the moon And on nights when the full moon shines |
