The monologue from Paolo Sorrentino’s The Consequences of Love (2004), as delivered by the character Titta Di Girolamo (Toni Servillo), artfully navigates the isolating and introspective world of chronic insomnia. This dialogue serves as more than just a personal confession; it is an exploration of the shared, yet silent, struggle among those who find themselves in the grip of sleeplessness. Sorrentino, through Di Girolamo, opens a window into the soul of the insomniac, a world where the night becomes a vast expanse of time to be endured rather than rested through.

Titta Di Girolamo: In the world, there exists a sort of cult whose membership spans men and women from every walk of life, of all ages, races, and religions: it’s the cult of the sleepless, and I’ve been a card-carrying member for a decade. Those outside the cult sometimes offer advice to its members: “If you can’t sleep, you can always read, watch TV, study, or do anything else.” Such remarks deeply annoy the sleepless. The reason is quite simple; for someone tormented by insomnia, there’s only one obsession: to fall asleep.

ORIGINAL:
