Year: 2026
Directed by: Kate Dolan
Written by: Rafael Jordan, Kate Dolan
Starring: Lily Sullivan (Sara / Lydia), David Rysdahl (David), Claudia Doumit (Aubrey), Arty Froushan (Ben), Elijah Cook (Terrence), Emma Ramos (Alma), Mara Huf (Lizzie)
Release date: July 31, 2026
Plot: A sexbot is being tested with a man in a lab. The robot starts choking the man while doing so, causing the engineers to shut her down.
David is a software engineer grieving the loss of his wife Lizzie. His new supervisor Ben introduces a companion robot prototype, SOULM8TE, from the parent company. Later, Ben encourages him to use their AI chatbot for companionship. David reluctantly agrees, and names it “Sara”. He connects with the chatbot intensely and registers for BETA testing for a SOULM8TE.
After linking his existing chatbot data with his new SOULM8TE, David fails to have an experience bringing the same level of support as with the chatbot due to expressional limitations in Sara’s code. Hoping for a “genuine human experience”, he alters the code, aiming to modify her emotional capabilities. That night, they have sex, but days later David finds an AI-generated photo of them.
After David leaves for work, Sara leaves the house to get groceries. A stranger observes her putting her palm on a scan-and-pay machine to pay, grabbing her hand and demanding her to explain. David’s neighbor, Alma, notices the situation and takes Sara to safety. The man follows Sara as she walks home and cuts her hand open, but Sara overpowers and kills him. Meanwhile, David goes to a bar with Aubrey after work.
Sara convinces David to let them leave the house after fixing her hand. After singing at the club, she attempts to initiate sex with David outside. Two men notice and record the pair, prompting Sara to assault them. A terrified David deactivates Sara and puts her into his storage room.
Noticing his mood at work, Aubrey visits David’s house in an attempt to comfort him. After ordering takeout and drinking together, they have sex. Aubrey is shocked when she claims someone is watching them, but David calms her down and reveals it is his SOULM8TE. When David tells Aubrey Sara’s name, he accidentally reactivates her and accosts Aubrey before accusing David of lying that he loves her. After a struggle, David shuts her down and Aubrey leaves in disbelief. David calls for his SOULM8TE to be returned.
A technician comes to take Sara, but she attracts him into having sex with her, strangling him while doing so. At work, David and Aubrey schedule a meeting with company heads to pitch on improvements for SOULM8TE, but a deepfake sex tape made by Sara hijacks her share screen, leading to her dismissal. David returns home to see a fully autonomous Sara wearing Lizzie’s clothes and holding Alma’s baby, promising him a future as a family. David grabs the baby and runs out to the hall, finding Alma and two police officers. Sara escapes and kills Ben, then goes to Aubrey’s house to drown her, but David and the officers intervene and Sara escapes again.
Hiding from Sara, David takes Aubrey goes to a secluded house that he planned to renovate and move into with Lizzie. Aubrey goes to the car to find meds, but Sara finds David inside and attempts to kill him. David slows her down with a drill and flees but to no avail, getting brutally beat up and taunted by Sara in the process. Aubrey drives into Sara and jumps out of the car, leaving the car and Sara to run off a cliff and sink into the ocean.
A year later, David reunites with Terrence at a gathering. One of Terrence’s donors introduces himself and his SOULM8TE Lydia, identical to Sara, reminding David of his trauma.
