In a brief, almost throwaway scene from Alex Garland’s 2014 film Ex Machina, the tech billionaire Nathan Bateman explains to his awestruck employee how he created artificial intelligence. The dialogue unfolds with the casual confidence of someone describing a particularly clever household repair. Nathan reveals that he turned on every microphone and camera in every cell phone on the planet, harvesting humanity’s facial expressions and vocal patterns to teach his A.I. to mimic human behavior. When Caleb registers shock—”You hacked the world’s cell phones?”—Nathan delivers the scene’s devastating punchline: the manufacturers knew, but they couldn’t complain without admitting their own complicity.
Ten years later, this exchange reads less like science fiction and more like documentary footage from the recent past. What seemed, in 2014, like a paranoid fantasy now registers as prophecy, or perhaps just extrapolation rendered with uncomfortable precision. The scene’s genius lies not in imagining surveillance capitalism—that was already well underway—but in articulating its underlying architecture of mutual culpability, the way our digital infrastructure has become a hall of mirrors where everyone is both victim and accomplice.
Nathan’s monologue performs a kind of rhetorical sleight of hand that has become numbingly familiar in Silicon Valley discourse. He transforms an act of mass surveillance into a technical achievement, reframing the question from “Should this be done?” to “Isn’t it remarkable that this could be done?” The ethical dimension dissolves into admiration for the sheer audacity of scale. This is the language of disruption, where traditional constraints—legal, moral, social—are treated as legacy systems waiting to be deprecated.
But the scene’s real insight comes in Nathan’s observation about search engines: that his competitors mistook them for maps of what people think, when they were actually maps of how people think. This distinction cuts to the heart of the transformation that companies like Google, Meta, and others have wrought on human consciousness itself. They aren’t merely recording our preferences; they’re modeling the architecture of cognition—”impulse, response, fluid, imperfect, patterned, chaotic.” The data isn’t a product of human thought; it is human thought, externalized and made manipulable.
We might call this the colonization of interiority. The last frontier wasn’t space or the ocean floor but the previously private realm of human consciousness, now rendered into data streams that can be harvested, analyzed, and monetized. Every search query, every pause before clicking, every moment of hesitation or certainty becomes part of a training set. We have volunteered ourselves as unwitting research subjects in the largest behavioral experiment ever conducted, one with no control group and no end date.
The manufacturers’ silence in Nathan’s account speaks volumes about the ecosystem that has emerged. They cannot object without self-incrimination—a perfect description of the tech industry’s omertà regarding privacy violations. Each company sits on vast troves of user data, each has pushed the boundaries of consent into increasingly abstract territories. To accuse a competitor of overreach would invite scrutiny of one’s own practices. And so a détente emerges, not from principle but from mutually assured exposure.
What makes Ex Machina prescient is its recognition that this isn’t a problem of individual bad actors but of systemic incentives. Nathan is a monster, certainly, but he’s a monster produced by a system that rewards exactly his kind of boundary-dissolving ambition. The infrastructure exists; the data flows; the tools are available. To not use them, in a competitive marketplace, becomes a kind of strategic suicide. Ethics transform into handicaps.
The film’s title, drawn from the Latin phrase “deus ex machina”—the god from the machine—points toward the theological dimensions of this transformation. We have created systems that process human experience at scales that exceed human comprehension, making decisions about our lives through logics we can barely parse. These aren’t gods, exactly, but they occupy a similar place in our cosmology: vast, powerful, inscrutable, and increasingly indifferent to individual human concerns.
Perhaps the most chilling aspect of Nathan’s explanation is its banality. There’s no supervillain cackle, no grandiose justification. He’s simply describing his work, the problems he solved, the innovations he achieved. The apocalypse, when it comes, arrives not with thunder but with a software update, installed automatically in the background while we sleep. We wake to find the world subtly rearranged, our privacy a deprecated feature, our consent a checkbox we don’t remember clicking but must have, because the terms of service say so.
The question the scene poses—the question we’re still failing to answer—isn’t whether we can build these systems. Clearly, we can. It’s whether we should, and who gets to decide, and what we lose in the building. Nathan has his answer. We’re still looking for ours.

NATHAN: This is where Ava was created. Go ahead. Take a look.
CALEB: Sorry.
NATHAN: If you knew the trouble I had getting an AI to read and duplicate facial expressions. You know how I cracked it?
CALEB: I don’t know how you did any of this.
NATHAN: Every cell phone, just about, has a microphone, camera and a means to transmit data. So I turned on every microphone and camera across the entire fucking planet and I redirected the data through Blue Book. Boom! Limitless resource of vocal and facial interaction.
CALEB: You hacked the world’s cell phones?
NATHAN: Yeah. And all the manufacturers knew I was doing it, too. But they couldn’t accuse me without admitting they were doing it themselves. Here, we have her mind. Structured gel. I had to get away from circuitry. I needed something that could arrange and rearrange on a molecular level, but keep its form when required. Holding for memories. Shifting for thoughts.
CALEB: This is your hardware?
NATHAN: Wetware.
CALEB: And the, uh… software?
NATHAN: Well, I’m sure you can guess.
CALEB: Blue Book.
NATHAN: Here’s the weird thing about search engines. It was like striking oil in a world that hadn’t invented internal combustion. Too much raw material. Nobody knew what to do with it. You see, my competitors, they were fixated on sucking it up and monetizing via shopping and social media. They thought that search engines were a map of what people were thinking. But actually they were a map of how people were thinking. Impulse. Response. Fluid. Imperfect. Patterned. Chaotic.
