Jupiter’s Legacy – S01E06 – Cover Her Face [Transcript]

Grace sees first-hand how the Code is affecting the younger superheroes. Tempers flare aboard the ship as Sheldon forges ahead with his expedition.
Jupiter's Legacy

Original release date: May 7, 2021

In 1929, Sheldon’s eccentricity causes his companions to question his sanity during a long sea voyage. As they attempt to turn back, Sheldon’s doubts are quelled when he rescues Richard Conrad from a shipwreck and leads them through a dangerous storm to an island, all of which he saw in his visions. As Brandon struggles with the morality of his actions in the present, Grace nearly kills Beryon, a supervillain who has killed Ghost Beam, a friend of Chloe.

[panting, moaning]

Right there. Yeah.

[Sheldon grunting]

Don’t stop. [panting]

Don’t stop. Don’t stop.

That’s it. Don’t… don’t…

[garbled beeping]

What? What?

[panting] What? What?

I’m picking up radio anomalies outside Mars.

It’s a rogue comet. [grunting]

[both panting]

Mars’s gravity must have knocked it off course.

It’s headed towards Earth.

Hey, can you pick up the dry cleaning on the way home?

[Sheldon] Yeah, of course.

I’ll make this up to you when I get back. Love you.

Mmm.

Love you too.

[chuckles]

[indistinct chattering]

I’ve slipped passengers through English blockades.

I’ve evaded privateers past the Rum Lines in the Gulf of Mexico.

If it can be done in a ship, I am the man to do it. But this…

This I will not do.

[splutters] Okay, you haven’t even heard our offer yet.

Your offer is not worth the risk.

Well, what kind of risk?

Half a dozen ships have been lost there in the last year alone.

Lost how?

Something beneath the waves, I’ve heard.

Take any ship fool enough to venture there to the bottom of the Atlantic.

You lot still fancy the Earth is flat?

Believe you’ll sail off the edge and all that?

I believe in two things, what I can see and what I can touch.

Okay. Well…

Touch that.

I am intrigued, but I am not touched.

Looks like you’re not our guy then.

No, no, no, George. George, let me…

Shel, we’ll get some other barnacle with a pipe and a boat.

He has to be the guy.

Why?

Because I heard you are the best, Captain Borges.

[Borges] Oh.

The best.

[chuckles]

Wait. Just give us a minute.

No, no, no.

We can… we can talk. Okay. Whoa.

Whoa.

[George] No. Put it…

[Sheldon] Hey!

We seem to be at an impasse, Mr. Sampson.

We can… Just… just have a seat.

Does that break it?

Or can we please all just go ahead and shoot each other?

Now I am touched.

Okay. Okay.

[Moroccan music playing]

[indistinct chattering]

Hey. Hey.

So, I greased some of the locals with whatever the hell passes for booze around here.

Okay.

And it’s true, what Borges said.

Eight ships went missing in the last year, right in the middle of where we’re headed.

The Great Old Ones.

You ever read Lovecraft?

That crazy nut from Providence?

He’s got these stories about ancient gods, monsters living under the sea.

If I spot one tentacle splashing around, then I’m swimming home.

[both chuckle]

You and me both.

And…

Do you think they knew about the ships going missing?

What do you mean, that was all of it?

Don’t get smart with me.

I don’t know. It sure didn’t seem to matter to Mr. Sampson, though, did it?

[indistinct chattering]

Please tell me that’s not our ride.

Look at that piece of shit!

How’s it even staying afloat?

It’s gonna have to do.

Hey, we’re still missing that other fella you swore we had to find.

It don’t add up, Shel.

What’s it say about the rest of your whatever?

[clock ticking]

Maybe he’s on the ship.

[Borges] Move, gentlemen. Move!

Over here. Look alive.

Welcome aboard, Mr. Sampson.

She may not look like much, but she’s a fine old gal.

[indistinct shouting]

[hammering]

Uh, where’s the rest of the crew?

Well, most of them decided to stay behind in Safi.

I fear they did not care for our destination.

Now, your sidearms, if you please.

I allow no guns on my ship.

Yeah, I don’t feel comfortable…

If you do not care for the terms…

You heard the man. Hand ’em over.

Haddo, see our guests to their quarters.

[Haddo] Come on. Right this way.

Mr. Welbeck, prime the engines and cast off the stern lines.

Aye, Captain.

[in French] Did you hear the captain? Moor the… Cast off the stern lines.

[air horn blowing]

[indistinct chattering]

How bad is it?

We can handle it.

Come on, Ruby. That’s not what I asked.

They’re worked up, yeah,

but, you know, any excuse to be a bunch of assholes.

[sighs] Shit!

Hey, Ruby.

Hey, Mrs. S.

[panting]

Call me later?

[Brandon] Sure.

Bye, Mrs. S.

Bye, Ruby.

So…

[exhales deeply]

…you and Ruby again, huh?

I don’t know. Maybe.

She said things were tense out in the field since Blackstar.

It’ll calm down. It’s just gonna take a little while.

You doing the rounds?

[Grace] Yeah. Should be back by dinner.

You need some help?

Your dad still wants you to stay on the farm.

I’m not doing any good here, Mom. I need to get back out there.

Look, I understand what you said about us being better, about setting an example for everyone else, but…

[sighs]

But what?

But it never stops, Mom, the hate, people killing each other for no reason.

What good is setting an example if no one ever follows it?

Because it’s the right thing.

Remember that.

[sighs]

[jazz music playing]

She’s a delicate vessel, Mr. Sampson. Any faster…

A damned antique is what she is.

[camera clicks]

[camera clicks]

I said the next time you come… I told you I got the watch.

You told me to bring…

[camera clicks]

I said, “Next time…” That’s not what I said.

Yes, it’s not possible.

[grunts]

Oh!

Sorry.

Somebody ought to put a bell around your neck.

And barbed wire around yours.

Help keep the natives away.

[crew laughing]

Is this your card?

[crewman] No.

[chuckles]

Hey, what’s with your friend?

He was talking to himself, and it’s not the first time either.

I’m not listening to you. Just go.

Oh, it’s just Sheldon working things out in his head.

[Sheldon] Stop it.

You see the way they’re looking at me?

Huh.

You know, there’s a bunch of boats at the bottom of the sea where we’re headed…

And he’s doing the heading.

[chuckles] Look, I’ve known Sheldon my entire life, all right?

The craziest thing the guy’s ever done is choose Northwestern over Harvard so he could see more Cubs’ games.

[chuckles]

Yeah.

[chuckles]

Okay.

[Sheldon] I promise you. I promise you, there’s no chance they’re gonna do that to me. There’s no chance.

No. Whatever they’re… It…

Stop it!

That’s not what I said. I said you…

[grunts]

[Janna] Austin! Austin!

His pulse is faint. He’s… he’s barely breathing.

[grunting]

Guys, he needs help!

Okay, you’re done! You hear me? You are done!

Light that bitch up!

Oh, with pleasure.

Say good night, asshole! [yells]

Stop it! It’s over!

Get out of the way, Janna!

No!

Move!

This isn’t right!

Screw it! I’m doing it! [yells]

Stand down!

He and Baryon ambushed us!

The fight was over! He was down!

I was making sure that he stayed down!

You don’t get to make that call.

Supposed to bend over and just take it?

Lower your voice and take two steps back. Now!

Sorry, ma’am.

It’s just Baryon got away.

We need to be better than they are, Jay, now more than ever.

Maybe.

Maybe that’s how it used to be.

But now it’s about not getting killed.

What’s the Union gonna do about that?

[Sierra] Oh God.

[Borges shouting indistinctly]

Shh. Come here. Come here.

Well…

[Sheldon speaking indistinctly]

Just stop it!

No. No. There has to be another way.

People are starting to look at me funny because of you.

You won’t leave me alone.

Who’s in there with him?

Nobody. I saw him go in alone.

[Sheldon] …questions, but I have to give them answers.

Stop… No, that’s not a riddle. I’m not asking you a riddle.

I need to know, why are you doing this?

He’s not just talking to himself. He’s arguing, yelling.

[Grace] Yeah. George said, “That’s just what Sheldon does.”

“His way of sorting his thoughts out.”

He was trying to sell it pretty hard.

Hey, if your brother’s off his nut, we need to know.

Hey, I don’t wanna hear that, Fitz.

He’s been through a lot, no question, but he’s fine.

No, he’s not!

We’re done here.

Wait…

No, no, no! Whoa!

We’re in the middle of the goddamn ocean, and your brother is popping a stitch.

[creaking]

The engines have stopped.

[suspenseful music playing]

[man speaking indistinctly over PA]

[alert buzzes]

You know Jay was just upset?

Mm-hmm.

Austin was his best friend.

Uh, is… is his best friend.

And he’s pissed that Baryon got away.

[Grace] And how about you? How are you holding up?

[Janna] I’m doing good.

[Grace] You know, you can tell me.

It’s okay.

It’s getting bad out there. I’ve just never seen it like this before.

Now, does the rest of your team feel like Jay about the Code?

Uh, I don’t know. Um, maybe.

[sighs] It’s not as black and white as it used to be.

Well, isn’t that even more of a reason to stick to the Code, to help make things right?

My Chloe used to say that.

[chuckles]

How is she, by the way? I heard she’s out of the hospital.

What…

The hospital?

Um…

[garbled beeping]

Fitz is signaling. I have to go. Uh…

I am so sorry. I… I thought you knew, and…

[Grace] No, it’s not your fault.

[sighs]

Thank you.

[Sheldon] Give me a timeline. Give me some explanation…

What happened to the engine?

[Walter] What’s going on?

The bilge pump went out.

What does that mean?

[sighs] It means we’re taking on water.

What? You didn’t say anything about that.

[sighs]

This is a ship, Mr. Hutchence. Water comes with the bargain.

Yeah, but it’s usually on the outside, isn’t it?

How long before we get moving again?

I have men on it, but my engineer stayed behind in Safi.

We left port without an engineer?

[sighs]

I warned you about these waters, but you Americans do not listen unless the devil…

You did this! You did this, didn’t you?

Whoa, whoa. Shel, Shel, Shel!

He did it.

He’s not gonna want his boat to go down.

He’s trying to squeeze more money out of us.

Get this ship moving now!

You do not give the orders on this ship, Mr. Sampson!

Hey, hey, hey! Hey, hey, hey. The bilge pump, how do I get to it?

Shel…

[Welbeck] Come on, you bastard!

[grunting]

Hey. I heard you boys could use a hand.

You heard wrong. We got it.

[grunting]

So you’re just, uh, stalling for dramatic effect, that it?

What did you say, boy?

Just making conversation.

Yeah.

[grunting]

You got any detergent?

If you wanna wash the shit out of your drawers, do it topside.

There’s debris obstructing the float switch and shutting down the pump.

Detergent should loosen it up, clear it out.

[laughing]

Well, that’s the stupidest shit I ever heard.

You got a better idea, let’s hear it. If you don’t, shut the hell up and get me some detergent from the galley before we’re all floating home, fat man.

[grunts]

[sighs]

[both panting]

It ever bother you?

What?

You know, that we never go out.

Hell, no.

Don’t you want me to meet all your friends?

My friends are shit.

[laughs]

What about yours, huh?

What about them?

[grunts]

I don’t see you busting your ass to introduce me.

Yeah, you kinda kicked the shit out of them when we hit you with our van, so…

[laughing] Shit. Sorry.

[chuckles]

But they kind of had it coming, okay?

[exhales deeply]

Okay, hold on. I gotta hit the head.

Seriously?

[chuckles] I’ll just be a second.

[grunts]

[giggles]

Start without me.

[chuckles]

Mom.

[whispers] What are you doing here?

You weren’t answering your phone.

It broke… kind of.

Chloe, why didn’t you tell me you were in the hospital?

It was nothing.

Did he have something to do with it?

Mom.

He is the son of Skyfox.

And he’s not like his dad, just like I’m not like mine.

All right. You’re an adult. You can see whoever you want.

But just know that…

Everything I do reflects on the family and the Union.

Do you know how many times Dad said that, growing up?

You sound just like him.

Chloe, your father…

Don’t. Don’t make excuses for him.

I’m not.

Bullshit.

You always take his side.

Don’t you ever have any thoughts that aren’t his?

That’s not fair.

[scoffs]

That’s exactly what he said when I called him out on all his shit.

[toilet flushing]

Okay, so, do you mind?

I don’t want the guy I’m dating to see my mom creeping outside my window.

I love you.

[man laughing]

[sighs]

Never heard nobody talk to Welbeck like that.

I’m not looking to start anything. Just trying to get us moving again.

You weren’t just having him on about the detergent?

No. Read it in a book.

You read books about bilge pumps?

[chuckles] I… I read about everything. It’s the only way in my country a guy who looks like me can imagine doing everything without some asshole like Welbeck telling you you can’t, ’cause he thinks the color of his skin makes him king of the damn world.

You, uh, talk to men like him the way you did back in America?

[scoffs]

Get my ass fired if I did…

Or a lot worse.

Stay here, then. Huh? Work here.

Uh, fix shit, from your books.

[chuckles]

[laughs]

Screw with Welbeck some more.

[both laughing]

Uh…

You know, America can be a heap of shit for me and mine.

It’s got a history of it.

But it’s my heap of shit, you know?

And the only way to clean it up is to get my hands dirty.

[grunts]

Do you really think Walter can get inside of what’s left of his brain?

It’s not gonna be easy. Half his gray matter got scrambled.

Brandon didn’t hold back.

How’s Austin?

Petra’s with him.

He’s gonna lose the eye, but he’ll make it.

They’re looking to even the score out on the street, using Blackstar as a flash point.

Yeah, Petra told me the same.

It’s just whipping the younger heroes up.

If Ghost Beam hadn’t stepped in, Vulcaner would have killed that asshole.

Well, maybe he deserved it.

Do you really believe that?

This world is not like it used to be, Grace.

Don’t tell me you don’t see it.

[Grace] Of course I see it, Fitz.

My son took a life.

I mean, he turned against everything we taught him, and he took a life.

[crew shouting indistinctly]

[door opens]

[Grace shrieks] Oh, God!

What are you doing?

[Walter] What is this?

What is this, Shel?

What else?

What else you been hiding from me?

This is Dad’s watch.

We…

We buried him with it.

What did you do, Shel?

Go ahead. Tell ’em.

What did you do?

Give me the watch.

What did you do, Shel? What did you do?

Give me the watch!

Stop it! Stop it!

What did you do?

[Grace] Stop it! Stop it!

[crew shouting indistinctly]

Hey. What’s going on out there?

I don’t know. Something’s got ’em worked up. Come on.

[alert buzzing]

[crew continues shouting indistinctly]

[panting]

[grunting]

Pull!

Pull him up!

[crew shouting indistinctly]

Is he alive?

Come on, mate. Come on.

[crew speaking indistinctly]

[Borges] Blankets!

Come on now! Come on!

Give him room!

Walt, it’s him.

Walt, it’s him!

You know that guy?

No, but I’ve been waiting for him. [panting] He’s the last one.

We’re all here now.

We’re all here.

What were you doing in the water in the middle of nowhere?

[panting] Volunteer mission. International Committee of the Red Cross.

You’re a doctor?

Surgeon.

Richard. Dr. Richard Conrad.

We were at sea for maybe a week.

Nothing but… but glass on the water. You know, blue skies everywhere you turn.

We never saw it coming.

[splutters] “It”? What do you mean, “It”?

The storm. It… it was… it was all of a sudden there.

It rose from the sea.

…It was on us. Oh, the wind came up.

We… we… we tried to go…

We tried to go around it.

…you know, or just out of it. But…

But iffen we turned…

Every time we adjusted course…

…it turned.

[Richard] …it just…

It knew…

…what we were thinking. Like it was…

…comes alive!

Ain’t you been listening?

Like it was alive.

[grunts]

And then, all of a sudden…

It took them.

…the world went upside down.

It took them.

No. Why did it let me live?

[thunder crashing]

[Grace gasps]

[rumbling]

[Grace gasps] Whoa!

It found me.

Oh, God. It’s here.

It found me.

It found me.

It found me!

[rumbling]

[Grace gasps]

[exhales sharply]

[thunder crashing]

Engine room, we’re turning back! Emergency astern!

No! No!

Turn back!

Mr. Sampson, get a hold of yourself!

No, no, no, no, no, no!

[all clamoring]

Hey, hey, hey! No!

No! No! Stop it!

Stop!

We gotta keep going! We gotta keep going!

Take it easy!

Get him out of here!

Listen to me! Listen to me!

Shel! Shel!

He was in the cellar in Kansas!

Kansas?

Yes! That proves that this is real! It’s all real!

I… I… I’ve never been to Kansas.

Yes, you were! Yes, you were!

You were there. You were all… you were…

You were all there!

Shel…

[thunder crashes]

[grunts]

I had a vision.

Oh, Christ.

I tried to tell you about it. I’m not crazy! We can’t run from it!

Just like Miller said, just like Richard said.

We gotta go straight through it!

Shel. Shel.

If we try to run from it, we’re all gonna die!

We’re all gonna die!

We’ve gotta go through it!

I’m sorry. This is my fault.

I should never have let George talk me into this.

Wait a minute. I never said…

I told you he was sick!

No, you didn’t! You sat in that chair and said he was fine!

I told you they’d turn on you.

Shut up!

[muted] You lied, you lousy little shit!

What was I supposed to do?

[Grace] You lied! You lied!

Captain, get us out of the storm.

No!

[yelling]

You just gotta do what I told you… you just gotta do… back in your cabin.

Get out of my head! Get out of my head!

[groans] Get out of my head!

[panting]

Shel? Who are you talking to?

[Sheldon whimpering]

You saw the drawings, the watch.

[Sheldon panting]

Shel, are you talking to Dad?

He’s…

He’s here.

[Walter] Shel?

[sobbing] He’s here.

It’s okay. It’s okay.

[Sheldon whimpers] He’s here.

Did you know about this?

No. He didn’t tell me about this one.

It’s all real, Walt. It’s all real. You have to believe me.

[Walter] Shh. Okay.

[Sheldon panting, groaning]

Hey, take him to his cabin.

Shel, just wait there.

Nice and easy, mate.

Whoa! No, no, no!

Take it easy on him, all right? That’s not necessary.

Get him out of here!

Come on.

Get the gun out of here.

Don’t turn it around.

Let’s go.

We have to keep going. He was there!

[Borges] I want someone outside his door.

Okay. Okay.

[all grunting]

[grunts, yells]

[all grunting]

[clock ticking]

Commander, what’s the sitrep?

Some asshole tore up half the block. Ghost Beam chased him inside.

I think he’s part of Blackstar’s crew.

Copy that.

You keep that perimeter locked down. I’m gonna back her up inside.

Yes, ma’am. Let’s go. All units, maintain a perimeter of 100 yards.

[man grunts]

[Janna yells]

[Janna grunts]

[man yells]

[Janna screams]

[man grunts]

[Janna shrieks]

[man yells]

[Janna] No! [grunts]

[grunts, gasps]

No. Oh, no, no, no, no, no. No.

Baryon…

Okay.

Shh, shh, shh.

It was Baryon.

Shh, shh, shh.

No, no. It’s okay.

It’s okay. Shh, shh, shh, shh.

[Janna] I didn’t kill him. I didn’t k…

I didn’t kill… [gasps]

I didn’t break the Code.

Didn’t break the Code.

[zapping in the distance]

[yells]

[panting]

[yells, grunts]

[grunts]

Not so tough now, are you, bitch?

[yelling]

[both yelling]

[grunts]

[gasps, grunts]

[panting]

[groaning]

[both yelling]

[groans, panting]

[Grace yelling]

[panting]

Call the coroner.

Ghost Beam’s down.

[officer] Shit.

Ma’am, what about that asshole?

[panting]

Baryon gets to live.

[water splashing]

[sighs]

[sighs]

[explosion rumbles in the distance]

[whoosh approaching]

[door opens]

[Sheldon] Sorry that took me so long.

Everything okay?

Uh, well, the planet’s still here. So, yeah, I guess so.

[Grace] Thanks.

[Sheldon] Ah, I don’t know. [sighs]

[grunts]

It’s just not as easy as it used to be, Grace.

[sighs] I’m gonna have to bring Brandon with me next time.

He’d like that.

[Sheldon] Yeah.

So, what did I miss while I was gone?

Uh… I saw Chloe.

[Sheldon] Yeah? How was… how was that?

You know, she’s Chloe.

Yeah.

[Grace] I, um…

I ran into Janna out on patrol.

J…?

[Grace] Ghost Beam.

Oh, right. Right, right. That’s Chloe’s friend.

She’s a good kid. How’s she doing?

She’s dead.

[sighs]

[sighs]

[sighs]

[sighs]

[melancholy music playing]

[thunder crashing]

Hey! You keep this ship on course!

You keep it on course! You hear me?

[grunts]

You try anything, I’ll put a hole in you! I…

I swear to God!

[Borges] Mr. Sampson!

Hey!

For God’s sake, Sheldon!

[grunts]

Put the gun down, Shel!

We can’t turn around! We’re so close!

[Walter] It’s over, Shel.

[Chester] Told you they’d turn against you!

We’ve taken it as far as we can go!

It’s over!

They always do.

Shut up! Shut up!

They wanna see you fail. They wanna see you fall, just like I did.

Shut up!

[grunts]

Shut up!

Mr. Sampson, if you don’t put that sidearm down, I will shoot you.

[thunder crashing]

They’re trying to take it away from you…

Don’t, Dad!

[Chester] …your dream, your destiny.

[grunts]

You’re just gonna let ’em?

Dad, please…

[gasps]

[thunder crashes]

Please!

[panting]

Sheldon! Sheldon!

Listen, whatever… whatever you’re hearing, it doesn’t matter.

It… it doesn’t matter if it’s real or not, because it’s real to you.

She’s playing you, just like they played Miller.

You don’t wanna do this. This isn’t the way forward. It’s the way down.

You gotta listen to her, Shel!

George, I don’t think I’m okay.

Miller knew what to do!

[gun fires]

[thunder rumbles]

[gasps]

Put the gun down.

Now, kill her!

[Grace] Please.

Don’t listen to ’em, boy.

Taking a life is never the answer!

Kill all of ’em before it’s too late!

They’ll lie to you.

No, no, no!

[gun fires]

[thunder rumbling]

[Grace] Sheldon.

[sighs]

[grunts]

[panting]

[laughing]

Well… there you go.

[clock ticking]

[ringing sharply]

[groans]

[yelling]

[groaning]

What is that?

[all groaning]

[screams]

[ringing grows louder]

[ringing stops]

[panting]

[grunting]

It cr…

It cracked.

2… 2:18.

[groans]

[gasping]

Shel… Sheldon.

[gasps]

My God!

[panting]

[ethereal music playing]

[laughing]

[gasping]

[gasps]
